When a stranger at a restaurant asked Melanie Dudley, a mother of a baby, to cover up, Melanie answered in a way that is being applauded by hundreds of women (and others) worldwide.
In 2018, while having lunch in an 86°F restaurant with some friends, Melanie Dudley’s three-month-old son decided it was time for food.
Melanie, a new mother from Texas, carefully removed her nipple so her kid could begin feeding without having to see her entire body. Nevertheless, a man sitting at a nearby table didn’t like what she was doing.
The man approached Melanie and begged her to hide. Melanie was prepared to hide, just not in the way the man had thought.
“I was requested to cover myself by a man while on vacation in Cabo San Lucas with my whole family. We were sitting at the rear of the restaurant, but I’m generally discrete,” Melanie said to Yahoo.
It was really hot, even though I was wearing a cover. The Texan told TODAY, “It was about 95 degrees, and my baby was sweating.”
“I asked, ‘What do you know? I’m taking this off; I’m on vacation.
Melanie was oblivious to the problem that the man in question saw. Instead, Melanie covered her head, which set off a chain reaction of laughing that erupted across the restaurant.
I simply placed it above my head. I’m not sure why. It wasn’t even close to being a scandalous altercation. That was all I had to say. I was at a loss for words, so I decided to just hide my head,” the woman said.
Melanie was photographed by a different woman, who then posted it to Facebook. The ensuing post attracted a lot of attention right after and has been shared more than 225,000 times.
Melanie received a lot of praise for having the courage to release her photo after it gained a lot of attention. Of course, Melanie wasn’t the first woman to face backlash for breastfeeding in public. Still, her creative response helped the picture go viral and the discussion picked up steam, leading major media outlets to choose to cover the subject.
